Postnatal recovery with Pilates

As a Mum of 3 energetic boys I can credibly say that having a strong core going into pregnancy benefited my body's ability to cope with and recover after child birth.  Postnatally it is hard to carve out time for yourself but even just 1 hour a week to spend focused on your body, what its been through and how you can gradually built it back up again is time well spent.

Pilates is particularly beneficial for postpartum recovery for several reasons:

Core Strengthening: After childbirth, the core muscles, including the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, can be weakened. Pilates focuses on strengthening these muscles, helping to restore stability and support.

Improved Posture: The changes in posture that occur during pregnancy can lead to discomfort. Pilates emphasizes proper alignment and body awareness, which can help correct posture and alleviate pain.

Flexibility and Mobility: Pilates incorporates stretching and controlled movements, which can improve flexibility and help ease tension in the body, promoting better overall mobility.

Mind-Body Connection: The practice encourages mindfulness and awareness of bodily movements, which can be particularly helpful in reconnecting with one’s body after childbirth.

Pelvic Floor Health: Many Pilates exercises focus on the pelvic floor, which is crucial for postpartum recovery. Strengthening these muscles can help prevent issues like incontinence.

Low Impact: Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, making it safe for new mothers as they recover and gradually regain their strength.

Stress Relief: The breathing techniques and focus on controlled movements can help reduce stress and promote relaxation, which is beneficial for overall mental well-being during the postpartum period.
